Day 7 Saturday - Camp at Rainbow (camp?). This will be the day to canoe Inskip Point or are we satisfied just walking to the top of Cooloola?

Notes

Or we can have 2 cars to take us to the farm overnight and have a bang up dinner there?

There may need to be a similar boat hire from Tin Can Bay for the last stage.

There may be a boat Dinghy hire but I am unaware of canoe hire there. If it proves too difficult to cross Great Sandy Strait I am willing to call a halt at Inskip Point.

This way we don't need to worry too much about wheels etc and the cars can stay at Noosaville until the dinghy is returned.

Issues

  1. Tides esp for Tin Can Bay leg
  2. Boat traffic is very high in TCB on weekends
  3. How fast will the sit on tops go?

Logistics

  1. We will not need to carry gear until the walking days.
  2. Kayaks will be accompanied by small motor boat, which will carry the packs, etc.

Questions

  1. Does John Jnr have a wedding on Saturday? YES, Bernadette's brother is getting married on Saturday afternoon. It would be best if I return to Brisbane on Friday night.
  2. Should we use the sit on tops or rent Kayak's Canoes from Elanda?
  3. Should we paddle from Inskip to Hook Point (and back?)

Kayaks/Canoes/Dhingy

  • Michelle has one single Kayak and may be able to borrow a second
  • Andrew's 2 man sit on top
  • Auntie Marg's 2 man sit on top
  • Rent a Dhingy from Elanda?

Benefits of Renting

Easier to use a car to transport them up there and over? Less fuel? Faster? For those interested in comfort and speed, it costs $90 per 3 days for a 2 person canoe and $160 per 2 days for a sea kayak http://www.elanda.com.au/canoehire.htm

Research

  • Cooloola Wilderness Trail (no maps) http://www.john.chapman.name/qld-cool.html
  • This page has tables of walks and canoe's with an estimate of 7km in 1 hour and 30 mins, which is about 4.5km/hr, that seems slow, maybe we need to do a baseline, I will talk to Micheal Cole who has done some endurance kayaking.
